CREE Si LEDs

I can't find the item that referenced this, but my recollection is that this would be out into the future.
I didn't get the impression that it is not ready for device applications.

The concept was that very small structures exhibited the ability to emit light. It did not specifically mention which wavelengths were possible, but I inferred they meant visible light.

Without really investigating it, I tend to believe this falls into the same category as porous Silicon and quantum dots. The technology is available to pattern below 0.18 micron, but such a fab cost in the billions of dollars. It is doubtful that anybody would make such an investment today to produce LEDs, but in 7-10 years the second hand equipment could make sense.

It would be interesting to hear the CREE researchers thoughts on that.

Thanks for the patent link. This was issued after I made my original search so I did not have in my files. Glad to see they are not sleeping!
