DougRobinson: The only problem I see is that the small guy with 5-$15,000, under the proposed rules change, cannot now benefit by buying on margin. He can't go short, since a margin account is required to go short. The small guys you referred to in your post were likely margined to the hilt and got "called" when their stocks declined. The real problem is money-management, something that every investor/trader must learn. The proposed rule change mat force the small guy to buy without margin, but he can still suffer whopping losses if his stocks tank. Nah, I think this NYSE initiated rule-change is a sop to the SEC, saying in effect "See, we're really concerned with the little guy."
Cowplop; they never have, I suspect they never will. But I'm open to further argument/discussion. (Lee)
