Brocade and HP Sign OEM Agreement for Brocade Fabric Switches

BROCADE SilkWorm Switch Selected as Connectivity Framework for HP Open SAN

Initiative

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (BROCADE(R)) (Nasdaq: BRCD) announced today that Hewlett-Packard Company has selected the BROCADE SilkWorm(R) 2800 Fibre Channel fabric switch as the first connectivity framework for the HP Open SAN Initiative, which was announced today by HP. Under the terms of the OEM agreement between the two companies, HP will offer the BROCADE high-availability SilkWorm 2800 16-port switch to HP SAN customers to provide an open, networked environment for storage.

The BROCADE standards-based SilkWorm 2800 fabric switch provides a scalable foundation for HP's unique solution of interoperable SAN components, enabling HP customers to realize the full benefits of a "storage utility." The storage utility allows HP customers to securely store, access, and manage data in a highly available and scalable storage environment. Based on SilkWorm Fibre Channel networking, the storage utility delivers a virtual pool of storage with 24 x 7 availability that accommodates changes in business processing demands and scales to support data center expansion requirements.

"With the selection of the BROCADE SilkWorm 16-port fabric switch, HP strengthens its position to provide investment protection for SAN customers with a full migration path to full fabric-based SANs. The BROCADE SilkWorm will provide HP customers with the flexibility to choose among best of class storage platforms and servers, creating an open networked storage environment," said John McArthur, vice president of Storage Research at IDC.

"HP selected the BROCADE SilkWorm 2800 fabric switch as its Fibre Channel SAN infrastructure after a comprehensive evaluation of SAN connectivity solutions. We believe that BROCADE solutions offer superior high availability, performance, and scalability in a standards-based product. BROCADE's approach to open SAN connectivity complements HP's commitment to offering our customers a choice of storage device vendor solutions to match their requirements for availability, disaster recovery, backup and information sharing," said Marilyn Edling, vice president and general manager of HP's Enterprise Storage Business Unit.

"We are delighted that BROCADE SilkWorm switches have been selected as the first networking framework for HP's Open SAN Initiative. BROCADE products offer a scalable platform to support all SAN needs-from entry-level to the enterprise. As the fabric standard for the industry's leading systems and storage device suppliers, BROCADE SilkWorm will provide HP customers with optimal flexibility to mix and match storage solutions with minimal integration. HP solutions based on BROCADE Fibre Channel fabric switches will help our mutual customers meet increasing storage needs while reducing the cost of storage environments," said Peter Tarrant, BROCADE vice president of marketing and business development.
