MKT CAREERS: Job interview

Name Derek von Bronkhorst

Job title Global head of communications

Company Flexion Systems

How did you get into marketing?

I worked my way up through the ranks. After college, I joined a
telecommunications company called ROLM. I was with ROLM for ten years as
it was acquired by IBM and then sold off to Siemens. With so much
organisational chaos, there were opportunities for those of us who
stayed with the company. It was with Siemens that I first moved into a
marketing role.

What was your motivation for leaving Levi Strauss & Co to join
Flexion?

I joined Levi Strauss & Co because of its tremendous reputation and
brands. While I gained great experience there, it was a difficult time
for the company. I spent as much time dealing with lay-offs and plant
closings as I did contributing to the success of the brands. Flexion
gave me a chance to blend the telecoms experience I received at Siemens
and the mass consumer marketing experience I received at Levi Strauss.

What qualities do you need to succeed in this industry?

You need to be hard-working, honest and passionate about what you do.
You also have to be tenacious.

What was your big break?
I would say I have been blessed to have had a series of small breaks.
I was fortunate to have tremendous a opportunity during my time at
ROLM/IBM/Siemens. I stayed there while most people in my discipline were
leaving. It let me do much more than I would have had an opportunity to
do otherwise. In large part, you create your own breaks through hard
work and networking. A little luck never hurt, though.

What individual has influenced you most in your career?

Without question, my father has been my biggest influence. He was one
of the most respected chief financial officers in Silicon Valley when it
consisted of only a handful of companies. I learned from my father the
virtues of loyalty, hard work, honesty, and integrity. I also learned
that anything worth doing is worth doing well.

What characteristics do you most look for in the people you do
business with/employ?

I look for 'doers'. I also look for people who take care of the those
around them. In a start-up you work long hours. It can take its toll. I
want people who know when and how to relieve the stress. I also look for
people who bring skills and perspectives different from my own.
Diversity, of people and thought, brings positive results.

What would be the one piece of career advice you would give?

If you aren't enjoying what you are doing, do something else. Life is
too short.

What has been your biggest mistake?

Trying to take on too much. Many hands make light work.

What has been your biggest achievement?

I like to look forward, so my next biggest achievement will be to take
Flexion public and help it grow successfully.

Where do you see yourself in ten years' time?

If things go well, I will be vice-president of Flexion, the best
provider of managed business solutions on the planet!

TollBridge Announces the Voice of Broadband Alliance and Open Source Licensing

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 2000--

Voice-over-Broadband Vendor Alliance to Promote an Open Interoperability
Forum for Next-generation Service Deployments; Open

Source Licensing Extends DSL Voice Standards to All Broadband

TollBridge Technologies, the leading developer of high-quality voice-over-
broadband solutions for a new generation of carriers, today announced the
formation of the Voice of Broadband Alliance, a leadership initiative to
promote interoperability and standardization among broadband equipment vendors.

TollBridge is pioneering this effort to ensure that Voice of Broadband
Alliance partners are interoperable with TollBridge's standards-compliant voice
gateway and network management products. In conjunction with the launch of the
alliance, TollBridge also announced Open Source Licensing for its Integrated
Access Device (IAD) design.

"The Voice of Broadband Alliance will do a great deal to help solidify and
grow the VoDSL market," said John G. Metz, executive vice president of Sterling
Research, Inc. "By ensuring that its TollVoice technology is compatible with
DSL concentrators from Copper Mountain and other vendors, and also compatible
with a wide variety of CPE, TollBridge is making it easy for carriers and
service providers to implement VoDSL service."

TollBridge has spearheaded the alliance program to accelerate large-scale
deployments by next-generation carriers: Competitive Local Exchange Carriers
(CLEC's), Inter Exchange Carriers (IXC's), Internet Service Providers (ISPs),
Multi Service Operators (MSOs), and cable operators.

Alliance partners include the leading providers of DSL, cable and wireless
access equipment, Integrated Access Devices (IADs), Integrated Communications
Platforms (ICPs), semiconductor solutions, and next-generation switching and
services software platforms. To encourage this interoperability effort,
TollBridge has launched three groundbreaking initiatives:
-- Open Source Code Licensing for IAD Design
TollBridge is making available a GNU GPL (General Public
License) version of its DSL Forum-compliant IAD protocol. The
code will be available from the TollBridge Website to facilitate
rapid partner development and break down barriers to
interoperability.
-- Interoperability Lab
At its headquarters in Santa Clara, TollBridge is hosting an
interoperability lab specifically for Voice of Broadband Alliance
partners to ensure product interoperability. Products passing all
tests receive Powered by TollBridge certification and associated
logo for display in marketing materials.
-- Joint Standards Promotion
TollBridge is committed to an open standards environment for
voice-over-broadband equipment providers. TollBridge is investing
resources to jointly fund standards promotion and
interoperability activities as well as providing partners with
promotional space and equipment at industry events.

"Carriers need the cooperation of multiple vendors to offer voice-over-
broadband services for an end-to-end solution," said Agnes Imregh, vice
president of marketing for TollBridge Technologies. "Standards,
interoperability testing, and a commitment to making systems work together in
mass deployment are essential to attaining the hypergrowth for voice services
that translates into profits for next-generation carriers."

Out of the box
--
onto the board; SMEs want ICT suppliers to offer strategic, board level advice
--
not shift boxes

London -- The future competitiveness of the UK's dynamic and
financially important small business sector is at risk because its
relationship with IT suppliers is so fundamentally flawed, resellers
were told last week. The warning came from the University of Durham
Business School Foresight Research Centre director, Ted Fuller last week
at a channel seminar about the small to medium sized (SME) business
marketplace. Although SMEs account for 90% of UK business or about 1.3
million firms, resellers are still failing to tap this lucrative market.
Fuller argued that the only way to remedy the situation is for resellers
and small businesses to develop a relationship based on long term
business development, more akin to those that firms have with their
external accountants and lawyers.

The seminar was hosted by Flexion Systems to mark the launch of
BusinessGuardian, its debut range of products and services for small
business which will only be sold through authorised resellers.

Fuller's warning was based on new research from the business school's
Foresight Centre investigating the gap between what the small business
needs and what the channel is able to supply. The gap can be partly
traced back to the lack of IT and telecoms solutions that both meet SMEs
requirements and which enable the reseller to develop this longer term
relationship with its clients on a profitable basis. Fuller undelined
that the gap has been exacerbated by the inability of the two parties to
communicate: small firms are looking for answers to business problems,
not the 'kit' or 'features' they are normally sold. In effect, he said,
the two parties are speaking a 'different language'.
This 'gap' was echoed by the experiences of other speakers at the
conference. Small firm owner, James Scarleft of James Yorke Ltd,
discussed the importance of Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) to his company but stressed the need for ICT providers to 'help to
keep the focus on the business not the technology'. He looked forward to
a time when his channel partner would become a specialist board-level
member of the management team or 'virtual IT manager', developing IT
strategies based on an in-depth understanding of the business.

This is exactly what Jeffrey Teece, managing director of Excel
Computers aims to achieve with his clients. He told seminar delegates
that, 'As a reseller, our success depends on our client's success. If I
help my clients to grow, then they'll help my company to grow too."
Although Teece has always identified establishing long-term
relationships as the key to his success with SMEs, he highlighted that
he has historically been hampered by the lack of ICT that really works
for a small business. Typically his options have been restricted to
pared down corporate solutions,

Teece and Guy Watts, from Getech, Flexion's UK distributor, are both
working closely with Flexion to open up the small business market place
through its BusinessGuardian range.

BusinessGuardian closes the gap between the channel and the small
business by providing products, services and support. It has been
designed with the business needs of small firms and the reseller
specifically in mind. Watts explains, "As well as providing the small
business with affordable ICT that does not require technology know-how,
BusinessGuardian builds on what is already installed while effectively
giving the small firm greater control of its customer relations. For the
reseller, BusinessGuardian promotes increased service revenue and
encourages customer loyalty while reducing support overheads and
facilitating the path to offering converged services."

'Mind The Gap!', the Durham research report launched at the seminar,
clearly points out that small businesses will only be able to fully
assimilate ICT when the supplier and small business can learn to
understand each other. The research highlights the need for a 'new type
of hybrid advisor who understands both the technological and business
development angles' of ICT and who can bridge the gap between technology
and business requirements in a current and future context.
Seminar host, Andrew Bale CEO of Flexion concluded, "There's the
potential here for a real win-win situation - small businesses don't
want suppliers who just sell technology products and there's no future
for a reseller who only does that. What the channel needs to ask is
where it can add value to the small business. Part of that is having the
right products and services to offer but it's also about a mind-set.
Accountants and lawyers offer ongoing advice and support to their
clients - not just balancing the books at year-end or drafting ad hoc
contracts. It's the resellers that can imitate this model that will most
effectively secure a profitable future for themselves."
