Added Note.
Don't do this around any other exposed silver! Silver has a special affinity for sulfur compounds, and if you do this on half your goodies with the other half sitting in the foul-smelling air, all you're doing is move the sulfides around.
Do this trick in a well-ventilated room AWAY from your other silver items.

Does this mean that some of the silver is actually gone from the piece? And is that a result of the tarnish or this method of getting rid of it? In other words, if I clean silver too often this way, will it eventually go bye bye? And would it go bye bye if I cleaned it with regular silver cleaner?
