CMGI broadband initiative with SoftNet SoftNet Wireless Web Plans: Analyst Comment 2/8/00 9:18:00 AM Source: Bloomberg News New York, Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- John Corcoran, an analyst at CIBC World Markets Inc., comments on possible plans by SoftNet Systems Inc. to sell high-speed Internet access over wireless devices. Corcoran has a 'buy' rating on the company, which now provides the service through cable-television lines. Quote Snapshot CMGI 124.69 4.75 ATHM 36.31 -0.63 HSAC 21.00 0.25 SOFN 42.81 6.69 San Francisco-based SoftNet said in a statement it will 'discuss details of a broadband strategic initiative' on a conference call tomorrow with CMGI Inc. and other companies. 'Excite At Home has been talking about doing this. High Speed Access Corp. hasn't made any announcements. Wireless providers and Internet providers want to get into it. There are four ways to deliver broadband access to the home or office: Teleco (using phone lines), cable, satellite and wireless. Today, they cover satellite and cable. I believe they may be adding wireless.' 'CMGI could provide content and become a search engine for SoftNet. They might need to work with an equipment manufacturer or phone company on this project. I think the market is going to be big; they'd be relatively early in this space. Is everybody and their brother trying to get into this space? Absolutely. I believe this will likely act as a catalyst for the stock.' 'It's logical they're going to rope in some wireless player and some hardware player. They're positioning themselves to offer high-speed Internet access to the home or office via cable, satellite or wireless. They now put a satellite dish on top of an apartment or office building, which gets Internet signals by satellite, then sends it to computers through the building.'
