Unfortunately, Cree does not sell the finished LEDs. It's easy to fall into this misconception, because everyone speaks of Cree as a maker of Blue LEDs. Cree sells LED chips, and lets others package & sell them as they please.

Thus, to define Cree's market share of LEDs, you would have to find all the LED vendors, figure out what percentage of their product comes from Cree, and then figure Cree's share from that data.

mtnmomma~ Don't forget about the blue laser bowling pin that should be knocked down within 24 months (very pre-chasm) when Cree's first revenues from R&D in this area appear. The shorter wavelength of blue lasers enable it to hold twice the digital code as reds in the same wave space. I imagine this will eventually turn up in the CD and DVD markets but could be far more important in military communications and advanced computer networks. As a matter of fact a research group, Strategies Unlimited, estimates the blue laser market could be as high as $2 billion by 2006. Nichia will continue to be a main competitor, they were the first to develop it. Xerox, Sony and HP are also into it. Until then Cree's main source of revenue increase continues to be SiC high-brightness LEDs and wafers.~russ@lurkerdude.com

Market share, and market share growth in the nitride blue/green LED markets I think will give us a good indication of market acceptance of CREE/SiC.

The following report seems to indicate that Cree has 43% of the market for the "nitride based LED market"....Nichia also has 43%. They also talk about the differences between the high-brightness LED market and traditional LED's. The report is from August (wish i had bought then!)....but it is a great primer on Cree target markets and business model. Stephens seems to have a teriffic analyst department.....the legendary Gemstar report was from them too.
