Jim -
I always enjoy your comments in the spirit they are offered - who else would keep me honest??

But on a more serious note, if you read my post carefully, it is precisely BECAUSE those competitors have been wholloped by DELL that DELL finds itself in its current position. DELL was rewarded for beating them - we all reaped those rewards in '97 and '98 - but now the game is changed.

DELL is in a race where they have to do 4 laps to win, but their competitors only have to do one. CPQ, IBM and HP can make 4% or 1% or even LOSE 4% in the commercial desktop business and still make their 10% revenue growth. DELL on the other hand MUST grow desktop share profitably and at a rate 2X the industry at a minimum to make their 30% revised growth goals.

Unfair - well maybe, but that's the game at the moment. DELL can "get out of the box" in a number of ways - but Darrell and Kemble suggesting that they will get there naturally by dominating the PC business, and that analysts that question that are out to lunch, is just not supported by the facts.

Jim,

In the market it's not what you have done it's what you are going to do. Finally it's a matter of perception based on reality of the above statement. Understanding perception has been and will always be the key to real success in the market. The above is a simple statement, but is hard for most investors to grasp.
