Pezz, you're welcome. I am glad to hear Compaq increased your free resources from 47% to 87%. Was it a lot of little things or a few biggies?

Too many programmers, system engineers and end users do not appreciate the conservation of resources used and thus speed lost until the last straw cripples the system.

BTW, Can anyone suggest a good simple benchmark to objectively evaluate speed problems? Tech support people often dismiss users' generalized complaints as "there are many possible causes for that but we are not one of them."

Here a few things that have made my system act like it was slogging through molasses in past:

(1) A new IBM Aptiva with a bad motherboard EPROM chip took four months of customer service hell before a VP of Customer relations stepped in to get it replaced. In the meantime I was subjected to the most inane advice, generalizations and "Simple Simon Sez" remove all other apps and peripherals which we did not supply and test thiz stuff.

(2) Norton Utilities which kept slowing my system to a crawl finally bought one customer support rep to the point of anger saying, "Look! Our software does not cause problems, it fixes them." On a subsequent call, a rep suggested a "last resort reset" which ended in a "your hard drive has been uninstalled" message and another panic call for 3 or 4 pages of step by step registry editing to manually uninstall Norton and reinstall it. Seems some behind the scenes undocumented feature was confused when my two of my disk drives were replaced one after the other. Fortunately some sympathetic rep remembered this having occurred to others and suggested a solution after four months.

(3) Some years ago a new version of Quicken, version 5 I believe, was cutting the subjective speed of my system by a good 30%. PC Magazine reported the similar results based on their bench marking. Intuit has consistently and vehemently denied being the cause, but a routine patch (5f??) was bought out a month or two later which suddenly released all that missing speed.

Sorry to rant in lieu of a trip to my therapist's couch.

P.S. A call to Microsoft support with a generalized problem such as "my latest MS Word" app is slow when I do x will generally unravel most such mysteries regardless of which hardware or software is at fault. They are tops in my book for customer support. They know all the dirty little secrets in this industry, yet they always act like professionals.
