Yes, well, Frank (as have others) have reminded me that I've been rather scarce lately, so I'm working on making amends.

I, as most technologists would be quick to second, agree that the vast majority Internet users are on dial up modems. If you look at the numbers published for high speed access, you will see a relatively miniscule number compared to the overall usage. But it's growing. Cable modems and DSL are gaining an ever growing foothold in this emerging access market.

My point was that even "mom and pop" cable companies like Bend, wherever they may exist, even in the boonies, must embrace the "cable telecommunications" model of multiple revenue streams and multiple service offerings to have a chance of survival in today's evolving multi-service environment. It may not seem like a big thing at first glance, but DBS' ability to broadcast local stations has a huge impact on the competitive landscape for the multichannel delivery industry. I'd be more than happy to explore that with you, probably more appropriately on the Last Mile thread. Let's keep this one for technology discussions!
