moonray, you ask a good question. you make an even better point..."Three years with this COMS management is enough!" that statement (and i think it's been 3 years for me too) reflects a thought process i go through nearly every time i look at the COMS profits i currently have on the table. it's tough to love this company with all the water and blood that has flowed under the 3com bridge. that said, i'm going to do my best to hold beyond the distribution. COMS shares will be easy to pick up around then, and i may be a buyer. many people believe that COMS will be the 'toxic waste' that's left over after the ipo. but i'm not one of them. i am one that thinks 3com will benefit from the ability to focus on their networking business. many people also say that benhamou got lucky with PALM. assuming for a moment that he did, what has impressed me is that he sure knows what to do with the ball when it's handed to him. to quote a recent piece (i think it's from the announcement about the alliance with adobe)..."Palm, which is set to go public sometime this month amid its separation from parent company 3Com, has stacked up partnerships, alliances and licensees at a near breakneck pace in the last few months. In addition to high profile licensees like Handspring, Sony, and Nokia, the company has announced alliances with Motorola and America Online." i think benhamou is showing great leadership here, and i am a guy who has publicly said that i'd like to see someone take him swimming with a pair of cement shoes. and the 2 to 3 earnings reports that COMS releases in the interim (while we all wait for the PALM distribution) will point up the likelihood of 3com's success without PALM. they'll be a great road map. i believe that an awful lot of people are going to be taking what they are given as this baby continues to climb. you'll never hear me say they are wrong. but i think there will be more. to be clear, i believe that the guy who holds COMS and the PALM shares that are distributed, for a period of 1 year after the spin off, he will be better off than the guy who sells his COMS at any time prior to that. an added bonus to the above scenario is purchasing more COMS when the price dips after the spin off. like everyone else, i still have lots of questions about all of this. and i always hold out the possibility that i may change my mind. because, like you've said, 3 years with COMS is enough! thanks for asking... :) mark
