OT cable modem ... security
I have one setup. I use SYGATE software sybergen.com
The key to good security is to have a firewall computer with two network cards (must be pentium class, win95, + 32Mb memory). I found a used one for sale for $250 + $50 for the extra network card + $100 for a switch box so the two machines shared the keyboard and monitor. The firewall protects and shares the internet on all the machines on your inner network.

(By the way, our cable company has been sweeping the attached machines and shutting down periodicly. It appears that a virus was loaded on many hundred machines which is sending out the packet overloads that are making the news these days. It did not get past the firewall on my machines)
TP

OT Firewalls

I have a simple set up using a desktop and @home cable service. I shut it down when not in use. While the system is on for about 5 hours a day, I think I am protected using BlackIce at a cost of $40 per year. See the following:

networkice.com

I get scanned about 5-10 times a day usually not serious. I am trusting that the scanners are being shut out per reviews in PCWeek, etc. Also I have file sharing shut off. (While I am responding, the software is now reporting that a student at Williams is doing a Teleport scan.)

I would like to hear if anyone feels I do not have adequate protection.

If you are running Windows (any flavor) I have to say that I am most impressed by a product called AtGuard from WRQ ... but there is bad news. If you visit the AtGuard web site ( atguard.com ) you'll see that they sold the product to Symantec, and that Symantec will be incorporating the features in a future version of Norton Internet Security ...

This is one of the best 'personal firewall" products that I have seen ... very well made ... a little "techy" ...
