In the Dell CC, they say they've seen a 20% increase in performance using Win2K over WinNT with identical hardware.

John - Re: "The PC I am using right now is running the final release version of W2000 and has been for several weeks. It works fine"

Would you mind describing your PC and the installed hardware for us ?

Also - was the Windows 2000 installed as an upgrade?

If so, over what prior OS ?

Paul

John, I have heard that this final win2000 release is good from a few others. I tried one of the later betas and it crashed my machine, was that Gates revenge?. It may have been the Lilo?? Well one day soon I will get one and try it to slay the dragon.....I may like it.
In truth it will take a while for linux to get alot of consumer desktops. controlled desktops with an IT department will come first...if they can dislodge the unix generals...perhaps they will supplant them>
In server space it is already the dominant factor.
One problem is the splinter effect of the assorted linx releases. At least linux has a method of allowing the streams to join the main flow again...unlike unix.
The consumers will have more choices soon. It may make MSFT back down on the huge increases in the OS/Apps cost over the past few years. 10 years ago the OS was 1% of system cost. Now it is as high as 30% of some low end systems.
