But the trendline you are showing is one of TODAY, going back five years. By definition the trendline now was not broken back then simply because it was created using those two minimums. That is 20/20 hindsight.

What was the trendline looking like back in 1998 and early 1999?

I would think those two corrections were below it at that time, not today's trendline looking backward, the long term line that existed in 1998 and early 1999.
