As I heard it, the dogs were perfectly okay when found by the police; I don't think either was injured.

Perhaps after finding the dogs hiding upstairs the killers petted them?

Don't you think that would be an extremely weird thing to do? And if the dogs smelled blood, I believe they'd have been very wary.

<<I was also told the dogs were "wimps" making it hard to imagine they might have bitten the killers>>

Most animals, even though very mild mannered, can be quite protective of their owners and their surroundings. The news story that Janice posted also points this out. For the most part animals sense danger far faster than most humans.

If the killer/s (even though hired) were also known to the victims, it could very well be that a bite or nip occurred before the situation turned bad and the dogs were then either placed or ordered upstairs by Chalem out of respect for the visitor.

<the only explanation I can think that makes sense>
.
Really, Jeff ... it's a talent to have the ability to compartmentalize; but,... <g>

Why not think shoes AND vehicle? It is highly likely that dog hairs were on the murderer(s) clothes AND, most assuredly the soles of his/their shoes. While the clothes were possibly/probably destroyed, the same would not be as likely with the shoes. The dog hairs would have rubbed-off/fallen-off (of shoe soles and, likely, clothes) in the "mob mobile."

Not as probable; but, conceivable, when the murderer(s) arrived, if C &/or L went-out to greet them, and the door(s) to the mm were open, one or both of the dogs may have jumped-in, as dogs often do. {{ Oh how I still regret the day 4 yrs. ago that our wet, 9 year old Shep. ran across a freshly seeded lawn and jumped in the white leather back seat of a friend's new El Dorado! }}

.
Just a few thoughts.
