And, may I ask, have you dutifully and voluntarily paid the tax on purchases you've made over the internet? When I purchased my Dell computer last year I received with it a polite little note reminding me that sales tax may be due in my state, and it was up to me to find out how much was due and to whom I should send the check. I'm sure that note is still here on my desk somewhere...and I'm sure I'll get around to it one of these days...as soon as the rush is over.

Comments on Taxing Internet Sales

Two points:
1) Isn't buying over the internet very similar to buying through catalogs? Why not just handle it the same way?

2) As far as bricks and mortar stores being at an unfair advantage because internet sales are not taxes, I have noticed that the shipping charges from internet sales are usually very close to the tax that would be paid at a bricks and mortar store. I think it equalizes out.

My opinion is the states and local taxing authorities are just looking for a way to collect more revenue. And the bricks and mortar stores are just looking for a way to gain competitive advantage.

For those people who like to send their taxes in from mail order catalog purchases, they can still send them in for internet purchases. I am sure the states will accept them.
