Re: I listened with interest when the guy responsible for collecting these taxes here in Taxifornia (CA) was on a talk show. He pretty much said that nobody paid them and that they did not have an enforcement arm to get the funds<

I also live in Taxifornia and I actually did consider the idea of voluntarily paying the sales tax on my internet-purchased computer (not for long but I did consider it). I rejected the idea for four reasons:
A. It would probably take me at least a half-day to even figure out where and to whom to send the check;
B. It could send some poor Sacramento tax collector guy into convulsive laughter or worse, cardiac arrest;
C. It would cost the state more to deal with this unexpected windfall than the money was worth;
D. It might trigger an IRS audit, with the revenoorers figuring "if this guy is voluntarily paying a sales tax, what is he really up to and what is he really hiding?"
