WaveRider Communications Inc. (Nasdaq OTC BB: WAVC, US$5)* This is definitely one to watch. Its stock was on a slow road to nowhere as of this past November, but from its Nov. 23 closing price of US$1.02, it suddenly doubled its value in six trading sessions and began another run in mid-

December that hasn?t topped out yet. Why the attention? Mostly thanks to a profile boost from its first buy recommendation?albeit made by Groome Capital Inc., the same institution that raised US$10 million for WaveRider in December.

But that doesn?t mean some buzz is not deserved. WaveRider manufactures high-speed wireless Internet bridges and routers. Its targets are low-density urban, rural and international markets with underdeveloped telecommunications infrastructure, where the cost of T1 land lines is prohibitively high. One product already on the market is for wireless local area networks that corporations or institutions buy to connect with each other and their local Internet service provider (ISP)?after the initial up-front cost, there are no hefty telecom bills. Another product line, which WaveRider plans to start shipping in March (for which it already has US$15 million in back orders), is sold directly to ISPs and telecom carriers.

WaveRider ran a loss of more than US$5 million through the three quarters ended Sept. 30, 1999. But revenues are kicking into high gear: US$726,000 in the third quarter, up 165% over the first two quarters. A higher profile may also be in the offing. In recent weeks, WaveRider has been among the volume leaders on the bulletin board, and a full Nasdaq listing could follow as soon as mid-spring: the final requirement is for WAVC to be priced above US$4 for 20 consecutive trading days, a range it?s now in. Will it execute? Promise lies with president and CEO Bruce Sinclair, a former Dell Canada president and Dell Europe chief executive.
