Thats not a bug, thats a feature. <<<a study from technology consulting firm Gartner Group raised questions about the compatibility of the soon-to-be-launched Microsoft 2000 with existing software programs. >>> I have been to several Microsoft presentations on Win 2000, and have heard them state quite openly that when the choice came between compatability and reliability, that reliabilibity wins every time. They have made a goal of making this product more reliable than anything else they put out before. I think this will cause short term pain with certain applications, and older hardware platforms, but the end result will be a much better product in the long run. Among the improvements made to assure higher reliablity, they have enforced the integrity of system files, especially DLL's. (system library files) If you install an application that tries to replace a system DLL file with an older version, that change will be cancelled, and the application will need to install and access the older DLL from a "side-by-side" version. ie - the application loads and runs the older DLL file, while the O/S and other apps run the approved version. The other major bugaboo that has been addressed is problematic device drivers. A device driver is a small program used to access a specific hardware device - video card, modem, sound card, etc. Device drivers may be supplied by the manufacturer of the device, and may not be written to the highest of standards, or tested to the fullest. In W2K, Microsoft has instituted a certification program for device drivers. To be certified, the device driver has to pass the stringent testing done by Microsoft. And finally, they are encouraging software vendors to develop their applications so they adhere to the "Application Specification for Windows 2000". The result is a more reliable and maintainable product. I have done some limited testing of the second last beta version of W2K professional (NT workstation replacement) and am quite pleased with what I have seen so far. Full Disclosure: I only hold MSFT in mutual funds, am not employed by MSFT, just a satisfied user.
