Thats not a bug, thats a feature.

<<<a study from technology consulting firm Gartner Group raised questions about the compatibility of the soon-to-be-launched Microsoft 2000 with existing software programs. >>>

I have been to several Microsoft presentations on Win 2000, and have heard them state quite openly that when the choice came between compatability and reliability, that reliabilibity wins every time. They have made a goal of making this product more reliable than anything else they put out before. I think this will cause short term pain with certain applications, and older hardware platforms, but the end result will be a much better product in the long run.

Among the improvements made to assure higher reliablity, they have enforced the integrity of system files, especially DLL's. (system library files) If you install an application that tries to replace a system DLL file with an older version, that change will be cancelled, and the application will need to install and access the older DLL from a "side-by-side" version. ie - the application loads and runs the older DLL file, while the O/S and other apps run the approved version.

The other major bugaboo that has been addressed is problematic device drivers. A device driver is a small program used to access a specific hardware device - video card, modem, sound card, etc. Device drivers may be supplied by the manufacturer of the device, and may not be written to the highest of standards, or tested to the fullest. In W2K, Microsoft has instituted a certification program for device drivers. To be certified, the device driver has to pass the stringent testing done by Microsoft.

And finally, they are encouraging software vendors to develop their applications so they adhere to the "Application Specification for Windows 2000". The result is a more reliable and maintainable product.

I have done some limited testing of the second last beta version of W2K professional (NT workstation replacement) and am quite pleased with what I have seen so far.

Full Disclosure: I only hold MSFT in mutual funds, am not employed by MSFT, just a satisfied user.

taxman and All: Go to the on24.com site and type in MSFT then select the article 02/11/00,UPDATE: Author of GartnerGroup Comments on Integration Problems for Windows 2000 5:37 Michael Gartenberg, Analyst, GartnerGroup, and you will hear the guy equivocating all over the place. This whole study was set up by these guys to drum up business for their company. Bear in mind these were the guys trumpeting the disaster that would come with Y2K. He says the people who should not implement this O/S without help are people with an extensive network who don't know anything - well A Duhhh!

It is amazing how stupid people who control big blocks of stock are that they sell 100,000's of shares based on crap like this and a few ill considered remarks by the likes of Dell.(On the other hand Dell might just have been playing hard ball with MSFT.) People are waking up on this score. Check out the ISLAND site: newgritch.island.com

and see that MSFT traded almost 3mill. shares and closed at 101 3/32 in after hrs. Fri.

This was and is a great buying opportunity. Remember MSFT has powerful enemies that are dreading the introduction of this product and they are doing all that they can to defeat it. This is the first time MSFT has come with a truly killer O/S in the business millieu and the competition is very very concerned. JFD
