Jochen- I couldn't find the exact article, but that $40 million investment sure rings a bell. I recall it being right in the midst of the Asian Crisis. Mid 97 or so. I thought it showed a lot of guts at that time and that is why it is fairly distinct in my memory. But I did find this info on the Cisco website.

"Singapore, 10 November 1998- Cisco Systems Inc today announced that it has posted a solid growth rate of 40 per cent, year-over-year, across its Greater Asia theatre in its quarter ended on 24 October 1998.

Despite some industry analysts' expectations of reduced technology spending in the challenging economic situations faced by most countries in Asia, Cisco Systems' performance validates the company's early decision to expand aggressively in the region.

"We are starting to see signs that investment spending in information technology in Asia is picking up. Cisco decided over a year ago that we were going to dramatically increase our investment in Asia at a time when many vendors were pulling back or curtailing their support of the region....."

Gutsy call, wasn't it. And it wouldn't surprise me today, if the $392 million they generated in Asia(non-Japan) puts them in the number one position of all the telecom equipment vendors in the world. Since things are going so well today, I don't think a lot of investors recall how risky of a move Cisco took back in those days. No wonder Chambers brought it up a few days ago in their CC. I can't blame him for bragging about it.

Now speaking of mobile wireless, I can't seem to get a firm grip on exactly what is going on in Europe with regards to mobile wireless access to the Internet. As most of us in the US know, Europe is WAY ahead of us in mobile phone usage due to our inability to settle on a digital standard. Unlike Europe that is all GSM.

But what interests me the most, is the number of Europeans that can access the Internet via their mobile phones. Is this available today? If so, do you have any idea on the number of subscribers across Europe that have this particular service? Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
