thoughts all? Another Oregon church in a 1st Amendment battle By AMALIE YOUNG The Associated Press 2/19/00 3:25 AM PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Officials in Jacksonville gave their blessing to building a new Presbyterian church, but with a significant caveat: no weddings or funerals will be allowed. Pastor Larry Jung says the city government is interfering in religion. "Weddings and funerals are central to what we do," Jung said. But the City Council says this is a zoning matter, not a spiritual one. "You think you've got God on your side, you are exempt from zoning?" said John Dodero, who has served on the council for 12 years. Jung was granted a conditional-use permit for the new church. The City Council decided those conditions would be no alcohol, the church must close its doors at 10 p.m. on weeknights and 4 p.m. on Sundays, and no funerals or weddings will be allowed. The conditions were imposed to keep increased traffic in the neighborhood at a minimum. Jung's congregation has been meeting for 120 years in a building that seats 125 in downtown Jacksonville, a National Historic Landmark town. Membership has swelled, however, and there are plans to build a 400-seat sanctuary and an education building on a 10-acre site. The City Council says Jung can still conduct weddings and funerals in the downtown building. But that's not good enough for Jung. He is still deciding whether to take the case to the state's Land Use Board of Appeals. This is the second time within a month that an Oregon church has gotten into a battle with city officials over use of church property. (cont)oregonlive.com
