High gang,

FWIW - With elpolvo's OK, I took the liberty to post this. I have always said that we are all one step from the street and our kids could be one step from where Dusty's son is. I would like to think this is what the Porch is all about.

evening tom-

whew. it's saturday. i finally got some sleep and my brain seems to be working again. don't count on it though :-)

you wrote with concern for my son:

If there is anything I can do like communicate or send anything whether it be magazines of his interest or other things that might make his stay easier, let me know.

being overwhelmed by the offer, and dulled in the brain as usual, i wrote back some kind of gobbledy gook about philosophy or something. forgive me. OF COURSE there's something you can do:

communicate or send ANYTHING, whether it be magazines of his interest or other things that might make his stay easier!

it's a living hell in that place! God's worst nightmare! and anything to read whether it be a letter, a poem, a magazine or a book that would take him out of there mentally for even a few minutes would a be a gift from heaven for him. kath and i send him short letters with encouraging words almost every day but it isn't enough.

here's a little bit of information about him. he loves sports, especially football, basketball and the dallas cowboys (RIP tom landry). he likes to read. he mentioned an interest in the magazine "maxxum" when i talked to him today. i'll send him a subscription. he loves food and cooking and wants to go to a culinary arts school when he gets out. he loves dark haired, dark eyed, girls. he's genetically predisposed to alcohol, tobacco and drug addiction. he has a terrific sense of humor, a gentle soul and is one of the sweetest people i've ever known. i love and miss him awful.

our relationship has been somewhat estranged at his choosing because he feels he "let me down" but he's getting closer to me lately. he feels that way with the world at large too. i've tried to do all i can to convince him he's still loved and respected. i guess i need some help from the world at large too. "it takes a village."

don't know where my head was when you made the offer. i'm sure that he would be moved and grateful to receive anything from you or anybody. i should be soliciting instead of politely dismissing offers like yours.

i have had many things i sent him returned by prison officials. one of the prison rules about the relatively few things that can be sent from outside is that books and magazines must be new and sent from the distributor, not from home or individuals. money can only be sent in uspo money orders (i don't recommend sending money because i already send him as much as would be reasonably useful for cigarettes, toiletries, etc. - any more might be used to the detriment of his health or well being). i use amazon.com to send him books. any online bookstore is the perfect way to send books. his name, number (GOD how i HATE that dehumanizing number), and address is:

Kidd Arrington #13497-051
United States Penitentiary
P.O. Box 1000
Leavenworth, KS 66048-1000

thanks so much for your offer tom

your friend,

Dusty
