Here is information on a product that does IP over DWDM. I think IP over DWDM is more efficient than Sonet.

"Today, the standards bodies are working on new standards like IP over SONET. Osicom has taken the approach to a new level?. Transport of IP over DWDM. We call this Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDN).

DWDN addresses a new class of problems emerging. While gigabit routers and switches are readily available today, what can you use to interconnect two of these devices over a large distance.
Even more fundamentally, how do you interconnect any two devices over long distances at speeds greater than 2.5 Gbps? Traditional SONET technology is expensive and not available at speed greater than OC-48. Multiple SONET pipes require multiple fiber runs, creating a situation that?s often cost-prohibitive. DWDN provides the technology to provide interconnection at speeds orders of magnitude greater than 2.5 Gbps.
Also, SONET is not well suited to handle today?s protocols: Switched Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, HIPPI, ESCON, and various digital video and audio formats.) DWDN transparently and efficiently carries virtually any digital data stream, in it?s native format, minimizing cost, network complexity and queuing latency."
