Hello Return to Sender,

Wow ... two weeks to catch up on 1000+ posts to this thread ... I'm almost caught up ... now I just have to catch up on Frank's thread ... ;-)

> Question for the thread: How fast is fast in the world of wireless
> internet?

I'll give one opinion ... I've been playing with (and really using!) 802.11 wireless for several years now. I started with some older proprietary 1Mb stuff, and then progressed to the 2Mb cards that NetWave/Bat Networks/Nortel sells ...

I have to say that I am very pleased with this speed, even when numerous users are using the same access point ... I'm guessing that I can see a real equivilent of dual-ISDN type speeds ...

> What kind of download speeds should a business user expect?

This is the really important thing ... if I were doing huge downloads of files, etc then I might find this unacceptable ... but I have used it for NetMeeting (video/voice conferencing), streaming MP3 and RealMedia, and doing e-mail etc.

I'm about to get some of the new 802.11b gear to test with, but think that the 11Mb really gives more headroom if anything ...

I once heard Bill Joy (from Sun) say that anything over 1Mb really isn't used by a consumer today ... a lot due to other Internet infrastructure issues ...

RTS and Thread- "Wireless Internet," could be; wireless LAN, mobile wireless, fixed wireless, satellite wireless. All are as different as copper is to fiber. And all flavors are sent to either business or consumer.

I just read an article in Network World where the author totally intermixed Cisco's initiatives in, "wireless," with mobile, fixed, and LAN wireless technologies. It was difficult to read the article. Cisco doesn't even have a mobile wireless product line(as far as I know) and you would think they did from reading the article. -MikeM(From Florida)
