[GDC Receives $19 Million Order to Build Out Twister Communications' Next Generation Network] MIDDLEBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 2000--General DataComm Industries, Inc. today announced a $19 million order from Twister Communications Network, Inc., for GDC ATM broadband networking equipment. This latest order will expand Twister Communications' network to a total of more than $26 million in GDC broadband products. Twister Communications, a Houston-based voice and data services provider, is aggressively constructing a nationwide next generation telecommunications network and plans to serve every Local Access and Transport Area (LATA) in the United States by the end of this year. Twister Communications' network provides prepaid calling card, residential and commercial long distance telephony, VPN, Internet and multimedia service offerings. This latest order for GDC's packet voice gateways and switches will bring to 250 the total number of nodes to be deployed in Twister Communications' network, enabling a capacity to bill over 10 billion annual voice minutes using GDC broadband technology. The expansion will result in the inauguration of one of the largest integrated packet voice and data networks in the world, and builds heavily on GDC's previous experience and track record of delivering large networks to telecommunications providers in Europe. "We are building our network on GDC's broadband technology because they provide a proven reliable solution to the problem of transporting our public switched toll-quality voice, video conferencing, corporate VPN and Internet services over one common network," stated Kamal Alavi, founder and president of Twister Communications. "GDC is an early player in developing broadband packet voice gateways and set the standards for packet voice over ATM; Twister is an early adopter in developing the applications and services for this market. Those leadership roles make the two of us a perfect match," said Charles P. Johnson, GDC chairman and CEO. "Deployment of such next generation networks by new carriers like Twister Communications is a good example of what can be achieved by combining innovative technology with entrepreneurial flair." GDC's next generation networking equipment simultaneously enables applications such as wholesale voice, Tier-1 ISP bypass, real-time interactive video conferencing, non-interactive streaming, Internet access, corporate Intranets and e-commerce. Bandwidth-on-demand and bill-by-usage services are supported today. "We have been operating GDC APEX(R) broadband equipment in our network for over one year, and we are now ready for the expansion as we move onward into this next century," Twister Communications' Alavi added.
