<<Z,
I'm just amazed at some of the things you are saying. "the 7000 has heat problems and a high return rate"?! This drive has been around for years, has sold over a million drives, has been widely lauded as a great drive, and all of the sudden there are these major problems with it?>>

Sam, Since it offends you, I will post nothing further negative that I hear relating to DSS. My source for this was a lenghty e-mail I received from someone with the kind of direct experience we pray to get on these boards. I don't find the comments incongruent with the signs we have seen-slowness in the 7000/8000, margin problems with the drives that are otherwise inexplicable, 7000 a year late, 8000 rumored to have had problems and stop shipments after introduction. I actually didn't repeat several of this person's moe damning comments on 7000 drive life and poor data retrieval rates because I didn't want to dump on them too much. I have no axe to grind here. Let's remain friends and in six months, let me know if I'm all wet. -Z

Sam, You'll be pleased to know I have something positive to say about DSS.
From yesterday's press release:
"In addition to its leadership position in the worldwide tape drive market, Quantum's DSSG business is the industry's number one provider of solid state systems, network-attached storage (NAS) appliances and DLTtape automated libraries. Combined, Quantum's storage systems businesses grew to over 20 percent of the total revenue for DSSG in fiscal Q3 and are expected to grow at an annual rate of 40 to 45 percent.

``With an annual run rate of over $300 million and leading positions in two of the fastest growing markets for networked storage -- NAS and tape automation -- we have the opportunity to reach the billion dollar mark in our storage systems business as fast or faster than we did in our DLTtape division,' said Brown. "

From the good old days, you'll remember that DLT grew to 1 bil in annualized sales faster than Cisco. If the DSSG business grows faster that might justify Dss's entire market cap. However, I would think that would require greater than 45% growth (Wasn't DLT 100% for awhile? The other question is how much of this is SNAP which would probably be given very high multiples vs libraries which might be more dependent on the success of SDLT. -Z
