I agree completely! I've been thinking for a while that it would be cool ... maybe even carrying a IBM MicroDrive of data with me ...

The only issue is that you would only want to put it into "trusted" machines ... because even if the data were encrypted on the storage device, the computer it was put into would have to be able to access the data ... and then, in a sense, you have "shared" it ...

For some types of data, this would be fine ...

Actually there's a company called TRG Online that has developed a PalmPilot that allows you to utilize Compact Flash Memory cards (like the ones used on ALL digital cameras). This allows me the ability to store information up to 340 MB!

The TRGpro comes equipped with a CompactFlash slot that can be used to add a variety of memory and I/O devices. Presently, CF memory cards range in size from 4MB to 340MB and other available I/O cards include barcode readers, modems and Ethernet cards. Our CF Compatibility page will show you our growing list of compatible devices. ]

Now if only the cell phone manufacturers were to look into this type of "add-on" to the cell phone....IMHO, the PDA and Cell phone will merge into one device.

Check out OmniSky [http://www.omnisky.com] - the modem is rather expensive but the services offered greatly extend the Palm Pilot into a more useful device than it current is. The only thing missing is the voice element. Actually the modem manufacturer COULD add that functionality into the modem element if PalmOS could be extended to handle those functions. Then I could not only "surf" the web but actually connect voice calls initiated via the web.

There's too much here to actaully discuss here :) But I am not bashing Scott's idea or vision - just asking for some clarification. He understands some of the architectural needs better than I do.
