MTNL open to sharing dial-up access revenue

MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 16: In reponse to the demands of Internet service providers, the state-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has agreed to sharing of telephone dial-up access revenue in return for a contract binding the ISP to use its network. "We will support any move to share access revenue. But the ISPs have to take the initiative to go to the government," MTNL chairman A Rajagopalan told The Indian Express.

So far, all the Internet rate cuts have been triggered by MTNL. Under the existing scenario, dial-up access charges (around Rs 24 per hour) are nearly double that of Internet access charges (below Rs 10 in some cases).......

However, a senior MTNL official indicated the PSU was open to giving 8 per cent discount to ISPs along the lines of what it was offering bulk users. "But this benefit should be passed on to the end customer," he said.
