I think to the complete answers to this issue and the issue of the use of RDRAM in servers is more complex than the ones given so far.

It is not clear that DDR is superior for use in servers. It is too early to draw that conclusion. A lot depends on packaging issues.
RDRAM has the speed advantage currently and that advantage may well be maintained as RDRAM enhancements keep ahead of developments in DDR.

It is also too early to draw conclusions on cost differentials between DDR and RDRAM IMO. The learning curve may be more important than back of the envelope calculations can now reveal.

Also lower pin count is an inherent advantage in any kind of system be it laptop, desktop or server.
