Cement, Refinery Products Soar

NEW DELHI (Dow Jones)--Combined production in India's six infrastructure industries rose 5.2% in January, compared with a rise of 0.1% reported in January 1999, the Ministry of Industry said Thursday.

During April-January, the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, production at the six industries rose 8.0% compared with a rise of 2.9% for the same period a year ago.

In December 1999, industrial production rose 5.2% compared with a rise of 4.3% in December 1998. India's industrial production was up 6.2% for the April-December period, the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 31, compared with a rise of 3.7% for the same period a year ago.

The six industries - electricity, coal, steel, petroleum refinery products, crude petroleum and cement - together account for 26.7% of India's industrial production index.

Crude oil production was down 1.4% in the first 10 months of the fiscal year compared with a fall of 3.0% for the same period a year ago.
