JQP,

The temperature change at a given depth varies inversely as the square root of the frequency of the oscillation and thus proportional to the square root of the period of the surface temperature variation. The mathematics of this is fairly simple, so
one can do some ratios and get a picture. I am in a hurry now, but if anyone is interested, I can work out the numbers. I do not know if the numbers will support the claim or not.
