GE Achieves Breakthrough in Gas Power-Turbine Design, NYT Says By Ken Mandel Fairfield, Connecticut, Feb. 18 -- General Electric Co. and the U.S. Department of Energy will announce a new type of natural- gas powered generating plant that will produce cheaper electricity and a reduction in the gases thought to cause global warming, the New York Times reported. The H System generator would produce electricity using 5.3 percent less fuel than current methods, a large amount by industry standards, and would achieve 60 percent efficiency, compared with 32 percent to 40 percent of typical coal, gas and oil plants. The Energy Department said the breakthrough is the ``the four-minute mile for electric plants,' the paper said. General Electric is the No. 1 maker of gas-fired turbines.
