rudedog - "They provide advertising and marketing assistance to companies who use Intel products, even when those companies are also users of products which compete against Intel, or even when the companies themselves compete against Intel as is the case with IBM and CPQ."

Outstanding post. I believe you have captured the essence of why the FTC trustbusters can't touch Intel. Microsoft???...well, now that's a different story.

This is one reason why I believe Intel has superior management and strategies when compared to MSFT. Maybe it's a question of maturity and wisdom, versus MSFT's brash and bravado. I can't quite put my finger on it.

There seems to be such an incredible depth and richness to INTC's corporate strategy. Everything incredibly well thought out. Their Internet strategy is like a symphony that just keeps getting better the longer that you listen to it. I am sure that it will reveal many beautiful surprises before the music is over.

Thanks for humming a few bars :)!

Rudedog - re: "I see these moves as being pro-Intel, not anti-MSFT... after all, Intel is not getting into the OS or applications software business"

Yes.

That was my point.

Intel does what's best for Intel and Microsoft does what's best for Microsoft.

And only "occasionally" are these efforts mutually inclusive.

What must gall Microsoft is that - except for the MAC - their only true successes have come on Intel platforms.

Up until the last year, Intel's true successes were tied to Microsoft.

For Intel, the game may be changing with Linux and Unix.

I think you might clear it up a little. I understand that Intel provides cooperative advertising assistance on those adds or parts of adds that feature and mention Intel products. Thus a newspaper add featuring both Celeron and Athlone machines will earn credit only for the % coverage of Inteliferous products. This is not mere decency or good will on the part of Intel. If they only supported 100% Inteliferous adds, they would be guilty of full-line forcing, exclusive dealing, or some such illegal anti-competitive act.
