Just the opposite is true. McCain, at his peak, never ran as well as Bush has against Gore in most polls.

And McCain's peak is history.

The idea of Democrat activists was never to elect McCain, just give him enough support to bloody up Bush and make him spend money. The tactic may have some effect in Michigan where union members are being lined up to cross over, and members of black churches are being encouraged to do so as well. It's more about a vendetta against Engler than it is against Bush.
