That news was not for you, haqi. You can't even read. I said I had had mental problems for most of my life. Then was then. Now is now. In my experience the one irrefutable sign of mental disturbance is the certainty that one is completely sane. Every nut I have ever known, whom I have had to get admitted to mental hospitals, was convinced that he was completely sane. They just won't go for treatment. One of the signs in the DSM of mental illness is "refusal of treatment." Do you recall the Stanford university experiment in which a group of medical students was admitted for observation to the Stanford Hospital and their assignment was to get discharged. These were functioning medical students. Some were kept for as long as three months. If the men in white suits do come and cart you away, let me recommend this strategy. 1. Admit to the admitting doctor (thus become an admitting patient) that you have been under stress and are not feeling yourself. This has been a short-term problem. And you think you need rest. Relax. Watch television. Read some trashy novels. Eat well. Take your pills. Become an organ donor and promise to leave your body to science. The next time you see the doctor or nurse, be friendly, interested in others, oriented in time and place. Do not be hostile. Claim that you are feeling much better, your bowels are moving normally, that you are a moderate Republican and a Methodist. My problem was that I always said I was an atheist, a radical, that physicians were badly overpaid and hospital charges were way high -- in short I always told the truth. Big mistake. If they give you a psychological test (and they are likely to) make the most moderate and conformist statements that you can imagine. "Q. Are people plotting against you? A. No." Remember that every day you are getting better. Express no hate or fear. Act as "normally" as you can, in other words act like other people instead of your real nutty self. You'll be out in three of four days (they need those beds to store fruitcakes in). The fact that people have had you put away is accepted by staff as evidence that you are a nut. Congratulations on your progress in Latin. Good of you to share.
