I was under the impression that Michigan got hit by the NCAA at the end of Steve Fishers tenure..I apologize if that is incorrect. Maybe it was just an investigation by the NCAA. You will get no argument from me about the Big Ten this year, in either sport. In fact, I was very unpopular this past football season, when I insisted that the Big Ten had the best conference in football. Around here, it is unheard of, to think that there is a better conference than the SEC. And in many years, that is true. But I dont think so this year.

I have always liked Michigan football, alot. There is a great tradition there. I pull for them against most all the teams they play. Ironically, about 3 of my coworkers, are Ohio St. alum..so it gets rather interesting during football season. Maybe I have grown fond to the University because my best buddy lives in Marine City, and I try to get there as often as possible. I dont follow their basketball as close, but I do know, they are a team to watch the next couple of years, when that freshman class matures.

I was reading in one of the Chicago papers over the weekend a lament that Northwestern didn't hire Tommy Amaker and instead chose O'Neill. I didn't know this but apparently Amaker wanted the Northwestern job badly after Ricky Byrdsong was fired. The article said that Northwestern's A.D., a guy named Taylor, already had made up his mind to hire O'Neill, even before they began to review job candidates, based on his reputation as a superb recruiter. It's now been three years now since O'Neill went to Northwestern and Amaker to Seton Hall and the fortunes of each are evident for all to see. The author of the article wonders if Taylor is man enough to admit he made a big mistake by choosing to hire a coach with a record instead of taking a chance on a bright young assistant. Coach K was interviewed in the article and said that if he were to leave Duke that Amaker is the only person he would want to take his place. Amaker was always K's favorite and I have long suspected that he will, someday, succeed K.
