Hello Jim,

First let me say how much I've enjoyed your posts since discovering SI last summer. I appreciate you fast wit and insight.

Re: "How do you decipher those numbers?"

Across the top of the Athlon case are two rows of information. The top row contains numbers and letters, the bottom row contains numbers only. The date information is contained in that bottom row of numbers.

For example, the information on one of my processors looks like:

AMD-K7700MTR51B C
219909123378

The first part of the top row is self explanatory. The "C" on the right side indicates 0.25 micron technology (this letter would have been an "A" for 0.18). I'm not sure what the significance of the "MTR51B" is.

Now look at the first six digits on the second row, that is the digits "219909".

The two lead digits "21" refers to the "plant number" I am told (some K7 processors have a "23" instead of a the "21").

The third and fourth digits give the year of manufacture, "99" in my case being 1999 ("00" on new Athlons for the year 2000).

The fifth and sixth digits indicate the week within the year, "09" indicating week 9.

In summary, "219909" indicates this processor was made during the 9th week of 1999 at plant 21.

I'm not sure what the rest of the numbers on the second row indicate.

Do you have access to a K7? If so, let me know what you read from it.

Kindest regards,
CrazyMan
