I know the Global Crossing doesn't want to get into owning content, but given the AOL/Time Warner merger, I have thought that the following would create the premier world visual communications network. This may seem like a far out concept to some, but it will be interesting to see if anything like this develops with some of the big networks. Just thinking out loud here of where mergers like AOL/Time Warner may be going. If Global Crossing were to merge with Universal Studios and Viacom, and expand its worldwide ownership of the movie theater chains to bring "Fiber To The Theatre". It would have worldwide distribution of premium content that it owns, connected to its worldwide Global Data centers that would house ecommerce companies data. When movies go digital and movie projectors go digital this would give them efficient worldwide distribution of content that would lead to control of the high end evolution of interactive video/film, the ultimate tool in high end communications/telecommunications. It would control worldwide influence by piping advertising of its ecommerce Data Center customers into theaters. When ecommerce converges with entertainment (buying clothes that actors are wearing, etc), they would be in the drivers seat. It would not be a TV Network or Telecom Network it would be a Digital Commerce, Entertainment & Knowledge Network wielding more influence in the world than is probably appropriate for a non-government entity. Of course that valuable influence could make it a multi-trillion dollar behemoth, that is able to collect commissions on all digital entertainment that has ecommerce networking integrated into the content, and manipulate world populations. It could become the gateway to controlling the internet by being the premium network that everyone wants to connect to for the ultimate advantage and leading edge content. Any comments? Is something like this impossible? Is a scenerio like this ridiculus to contemplate for our future? P.S. In this scenerio, if they were real ingenius the local theaters could be used for grass roots influence as to what the local communities looked for on the internet and the portals they connected with. A variety of local Portals and websites (paying GBLX for space in their Data Centers) could carry GBLX content in the form of reruns and old movies like TV stations do now, and their local advertising dollars and e-links to commerce would funnel big $$ to GBLX.
