"Without the Chinese we would not even be in America." Hell, nihil, if it was left to
Chinese mariners, no one would have gotten out of sight of land. --- Michael M

Dear Mike,

I am sorry that you reduce everything to personal insults and ad personem attacks. I had the impression from some of your previous posts that you had some interest in history. Perhaps not you, but your posts (like this one) seem racially prejudiced. Your refusal to recognize the Chinese for their great contributions to maritime exploration and equipment shows IMO an astounding level of ignorance. I was specifically referring to the Chinese invention of the magnetic compass and the great voyages of Cheng Ho (Zheng He) in the the 15th Century (Ming Dynasty). It's perfectly all right (with me) for you to expose your ignorance and bigotry for everyone to see, but I can't see what you get out of it. Except a well-earned reputation as an ignorant blow hard or wind-bag (if you wish).
If you (or anyone else) would like to learn something of the great Chinese achievements in science and technology, please read the works of Joseph Needham. If you or anyone would like to learn something of great Chinese maritime achievements, read

Did you miss Neocon saying "Modernity is Western"?

Of course you can define anything any way you want but that is one of the most odd, parochial, and extreme statements I've ever seen. I am sure, at this very moment, some man in China is saying the VERY same thing, with one alteration, "Modernity is Chinese", and then there's probably someone in Japan saying the same thing, with one alteration of course....

None of them are right, imo. But who knows for sure? SO much goes into "modernity" it's a stew (again, only my opinion), and the ingredients are so mixed I wouldn't want to have to try to recover the basic components. Just tracking down the origins of ONE SINGLE idea is hard enough.
