They "borrowed" from the West, as we borrowed from the East. Civilization is like that. Buddhism has had a HUGE effect on modern culture, and Asian food (ONE example) has taken over, (and we are what we eat- in which case our family is actually Asian) these are only two examples- I can think of many more. Your argument IS parochial and it is blunt (imo), whereas I see history and time as nuanced. I would never say "MODERNITY IS NOT WESTERN" because I just don't think either the above statement or your statement is provable, or makes any sense, although the burden is usually perceived to be on the person making the positive assertion.
