Govt to consider single licence issue

Communications minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Monday said that the government will examine the issue of a single licence for multiple services as a way of providing level playing field in the telecom sector.

Asked on the industry demand for an area licence instead of a service specific licence, Mr Paswan said, "we will examine the issue'.

The private sector has been demanding that the government should give a single licence which would cover all telecom services like basic telephony, cellular services and internet connection in view of the convergence of technology. It would help the private sector to achieve scale of operations in the telecom sector.

Government companies like VSNL and MTNL can provide new telecom services with minimum investment while the private sector has to seek different licence for each service which envisages huge investment for each service.

Mr Paswan said that the government has an open mind in dealing with all problems of the industry and all genuine problems will be addressed in every possible way.

He was speaking at a national workshop on telecom convergence and new framework for TRAI, organised by Assocham here. Mr Paswan said finance minister Yashwant Sinha has been approached to reduce customs duty on the telecom equipment required by the internet service providers.
