themselves of their colonies......<

I have been thinking about this all day, and I have finally come to the conclusion that you simply don't know much about colonialism. Because I think it was you who was so aghast at the concept of slavery- it was you wasn't it?

Yet horrible atrocities happened under colonialism, countries were ruined, despoiled, looted. I'll give you just one example- The Belgians- King Leopold ran his colony (Belgian Congo, later Zaire) as a personal treasure chest- of course he kept control by terror- and 4 to 8 million people were killed to make King Leo wealthy. I'm guessing you know absolutely nothing of this. Perhaps you have in mind the noble Sahib striding about India bringing "modernity" to the little brown folk? Whatever you have in mind I think you should do a bit more research on the colonial powers and what EXACTLY they did, before you wistfully harken back to the time of their domination.
