Your mother's guru du jour--ever Sai Baba? He has many Western believers.

Curiously,

Nuni

Steven, whenever something profound and/or complex is popularized, you get these weird distortions.

Speaking for myself, I find New Age "thinking" ridiculous (but please don't tell my step-children!). I wouldn't touch any of it with a ten-foot-pole. On the other hand, I find my discussions of Zen Buddhism with my brother, or of Taoism with my son, stimulating and enlightening, because they are serious students of the philosophies they have chosen to embrace. And they feel -- rightly, I think -- much better equipped to deal with life than they were before.

And perhaps you ought to be a little more sympathetic to (or tolerant of) the "spiritual tourists" it is so easy to poke fun at. They are economically comfortable, but spiritually empty, so much so that they can't tell the ersatz from the real thing. But they are no sillier than a lot of people who seek spiritual enlightenment through more "traditional" channels.
