Here is a url for a great description of the cat 5 specification. You'll notice that only solid wire is recommended for permanent installations, and stranded only for patch cables not permanently installed. It indicated that stranded wire is less stable in aging and can actually increase signal loss as time goes on. Also I think you will have problems punching down stranded cable into a patch panel. Also stranded patch cables are limited to 10 meters (approx 33 feet)
Given the minimal cost of solid UTP (untwisted pair) cat 5 cable, I wouldn't install anything else. I buy it local for around $75 per 1000 ft. Shopper.com has it for $24 for 250' and $90 for 1000'.
shopper.cnet.com You'll see some plenum grade cables there, you don't need it. Plenum grade is fire rated for use in a commercial environment where it is run in the ceiling and the ceiling area is used for a return air plenum. Fire code requires it in those cases.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Good Luck
Dan
