I have no doubt that AG will try to keep this bubble with all his might. In fact that is what he has been doing. His Humphrey Hawkins testimony is a joke.

He says "Raising margin is not effective!" Huh! What is his basis in saying that. If so why is that commodity exchanges routines keep changing the margin rules? Perhaps AG may be right in one aspect. People are borrowing against credit cards to buy stocks on margin - that is an infinite margin. How do you suppose this type of speculation will be affected if margin rates are to be raised to 70%. INstead of having $2x for speculation ($x from credit card + $x from margin), people will still have 1.3x (if margin req is 75%) to speculate with.

We will know bubbles only in retrospect? Hello!!! The whole world is yelling that there is unrestrained speculation in stock markets around the world, led by the markets here. Is he trying to dodge the consequences by not admitting to the bubble? I think he is!

I do think he will keep trying, as he has been doing for the last 3 years, to keep the bubble alive. But the dislocations in other markets will be so bad that it will be beyond his control to do any thing.

BTW, ff the British are pioneers in the so called "divide and rule" policy, Clinton administration is the pioneer in spin-and-rule. Spin every damn fact in their favor. The Feds too took a leaf from Slick's book and that is what they are playing now!
