The was a law that attempted to pass (but didn't) where people ( gay or straight ) could have increased privileges if they had lived together for a certain length of time.

Gays are just as serious about their relationships as straight people are which is something I've learned while living in the San Francisco Bay area. They even care for each other through serious illness, etc. They are human beings with lives just like us straight people and it really is a travesty that they have no legal rights to their partners lives. There have been cases where the individuals family is very bigoted and will refuse to allow the partner of many years to be present at a death bed. Suppose your in-laws hated you and could legally refuse you access to a family member while they were dying. You don't need additional rights cause you are already protected by marriage..........they're not.
