garyx, Re elon I wanted to delurk long enough to compliment you on your recap of elon's emergence on the thread. It's interesting to see how ideas percolate to the surface on this thread, sink, and then resurface. What fascinates me about elon's evolution to date, and may very well distinguish it from previous gorilla candidates, is the way it has attained its position. There has been a lot of stealth in positioning its product (or so it seems to me) by very clever men who realized early on that their baby could be stomped on far too easily in its early stages if they weren't careful. This is not to say that elon's position is assured or that it is a gorilla. Only that it seems that a number of very thoughtful and determined folks have been quietly planting seeds for a while now, lining up the pins and *future* value chain, to set the stage for gorillahood as much as it is humanly possible . And why? Because, IMVVHO, I think the gorilla-like situations csco and msft found themselves in during the early stage of the tech revolution are becoming rarer. The naivete is gone. People are more savvy, the competition is growing more fierce, and competitive models are cropping up at earlier and earlier stages before an enabling technology has a chance to take hold. People can see the *potential* of a new system much, much earlier. In other words, if we could turn back the clock and msft were to bring its operating system to market once more at the same point in time BUT the tech world had the level of talent & vision it has today, we probably would have seen competing systems ramping up faster and in greater numbers. Msft might have eventually won out, but it would have been a much steeper climb to the top of the heap. (I realize there are a number of specifics about msft's history that could be used to combat this thought, but I am looking at broader trends and movements, so apologies if this specific example has bugs.) ; ) Elon's handlers seem to have been aware of this, and rather than trumpet their tech early on, are trying to give it as many advantages of gorillahood *ahead of time.* I am far less knowledgeable than most of the people on this thread in the ways of the hi-tech world, but it seems to that we are seeing -- dare I say it? -- very guerilla-like tactics to bring potential primatehood to the foreground. ; ) I am so far behind on my thread reading here and elsewhere that I'd planned to keep this short. Apologies for running on. The final point I wish to make, is that, perhaps, looking for such backwater grooming grounds may be a way to suss out future gorillas. Back to lurking mode. Regards, blan
