The centerpiece of Lucent's eight-product unveiling is the WaveStar DataExpress 10G, which is designed to provide local service providers with a mechanism for packing broad streams of Internet Protocol traffic onto an OC-192 pipe. The DataExpress is equipped with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, enabling enterprises to plug high-speed local network gear directly into the 10-Gbps connection. The DataExpress appears to be a niche product. As pointed out by Mr. Fun, this is a product which ISPs will use for access. Congratulations to Lucent for filling a niche but it remains to be seen whether their other 10G products are really competitive with Nortel.
