The point was that Chen said Intel would go fabless.

Cyrix and Nextgen failed miserably in the x86 market despite having good design capability.

Cyrix sold a lot of 486's and MediaGX parts. Their high end processors were crippled by a short pipeline and were not competitive in MHz. It was Jerry Roger's architectural philosophy that hurt the company more than anything.
