Now that Labrador Retriever story:

Way I heard it was that an old prospector was trying to catch some trout over at Moyie Lake in B.C. He could see the trout swimming around but they wouldn't bite, so he went and got the ultimate fishing lure, the stick of dynamite. (Locally known as a CIL* Wobbler.) He lit the fuse and tossed it into the lake.

Of course he forgot his trusty Lab Retriever which promptly jumped into the lake to retrieve the (dynamite) stick.

The old prospector, realizing what was going to happen next, panicked as the dog reached the stick, grabbed it in its mouth, turned and began to swim back towards him. The old guy took off up the hill.
The dog retrieved the "stick" then ran after his master to deliver it, so that his master could throw it again.

They say the old guy made the best time ever up Moyie Mountain and was at one point kicking slow running Jack Rabbits out of his way.

The fuse had gone out when it hit the water and beyond a bad scare and new record for rapid hill-climbing, neither he or the dog were injured.

I think this version of the story is likely true as I heard it long before the Cherokee version.
Secondly dynamite is used in fishing not duck hunting. Thirdly there are a lot of old prospectors in the vicinity of Moyie.

Where I am less certain of the story is that I have never seen a Jack Rabbit around Moyie Lake. Maybe they don't hang around once they have been kicked.

Finally I read this story in the Kootenay Advertiser about 10 years ago and that august journal is seldom doubted in these parts.
(Except where they tell you that the used Cherokee was only driven on the highway by a little old lady in the summer time.)
